Plan Your Life In Style: 15 Beautiful Bullet Journal Theme Ideas

Creating a bullet journal is one of my favorite pastimes. I love incorporating new styles each month and trying out different types of spreads.

Last year was my first full year of bullet journaling, and it was a wonderful experience. I mostly used mine as a daily journal about my day rather than as a planner for productivity. It’s really neat being able to look back on all that I’ve done over the year. I love the flexibility of getting to fill it up however I want and the freedom to come up with new layouts and spread ideas. It’s fun experimenting with new spreads and being able to change it up as needed.

While I haven’t really been creating separate themes for each month, I’ve been sticking to a consistent color palette and theme throughout the whole journal.

This year, I’ve been varying up the themes in my bullet journal more, so I also decided to share some ideas for inspiration.

1. Floral

Floral themes are very popular in the bullet journaling world, ones including watercolor, marker, ink, or mixed media. I’ve seen complex and intricate versions of this theme, as well as simple and minimalist ones. This is personally one of my favorites that I’ve used in my own journal.

2. Food Groups

A simple theme that works well for bullet journals is food categories; often fruit, vegetables, or desserts. I’ve seen some with cute faces drawn on, as well as arms and legs; others that look more realistic and more appetizing.

3. Book or Movie

If you have a book or movie you’ really enjoy or can’t stop talking about to your friends and family, then maybe it can work as a theme for your bujo that week, month, or year.  Two popular ones I’ve seen floating around Pinterest are Star Wars and Harry Potter.

4. Space or Galaxy

A slightly less common theme you can use is a space or galaxy theme, which can include spreads on moon phases, stars, the sun, as well as planets and the solar system. Some nice examples of this theme include the one done by AmandaRachLee and @twisted_sal. I haven’t seen this theme done as much as others, like floral or seasonal themes, but if you like doing something less common, and especially if you have a fascination with astrology, then a space or galaxy theme may work for you.

5. Seasons

Fall
Spring

A basic theme that can include a large variety of outdoor things is the seasons of the year. Beaches, palm trees, sunscreen, sunglasses, and green plants for summer. Ideas for fall include leaves, apple trees and pumpkins, while winter can include skiing, snowmen, and hot chocolate.

6. A Specific Object

Leaves

If you’d rather go for a more simple approach, then you can make a whole theme that revolves around a single object. I’ve seen examples based on crystals, coffee, animals, succulents, plants, lights, stars, mountains, cacti, as well as just anything.

7. Cities

City

If you’re having trouble coming up with up with a theme to use for your bullet journal, then another idea is to base it off a town or city, such as the one you live in or one you’d like to travel to. Popular ones include Paris, which can involve the major attractions found there, such as the Eiffel Tower. This type of theme can include the culture, fashion, food, as well as any major attractions found there. You can even write quotes or facts about the city, or French words written in fancy calligraphy. you don’t have a particular city in mind, then a general town or city can be just as appealing.

8. Holidays

Christmas

Themes can also be based on holidays; typically for ones that are monthly. A theme about Christmas can entail Christmas trees, ornaments, Santa Clause, candy canes, mistletoe, or gingerbread. A Halloween theme can involve costumes, jack-o-lanterns, candy, or skeletons and werewolves.

9. Mandalas

Mandalas are interesting, usually symmetric designs that can make great themes for a bullet journal. I’ve personally used this theme in the past and it’s a great way to add to a simple spread that’s looking too minimalistic or plain. Mandalas can be simple or complex and great for beginners.

10. Landforms

Forest

Deserts, forests, mountains, and other landforms are also themes you can use for bullet journals. They can include plant and wildlife in the area, as well as the type of climate and weather that’s present there. A theme on deserts can contain cacti, tumbleweed, and camels.

11. Architecture

Woods

A distant city skyline or landscape filled with houses and other buildings can work as a theme for bullet journaling. Buildings can be as intricate or as simple as you make them.

12. Occupations

Doodles

Some interesting themes for your bullet journal can be based off of occupations. For a theme about doctors, you can include doodles or pictures of hospitals, stethoscopes, and ambulances; or teeth and toothpaste for a dentist theme.

13. Ocean

Ocean themes can be based completely on an underwater environment containing fish, coral, seaweed and sea monsters, or can be focused on things  above the surface, involving the beach and waves, as well as ships in the water.

14. Maps

map

Maps can be a cool addition to a bullet journal, whether real or made up. They add appeal to a page, placed along the outer edges. Also, boxes for categories in a spread can be drawn in the shapes of countries or bodies of water. To create some variety in your bullet journal, you can even have a map filling up a portion or all of a page.

Including themes in a bullet journal is a great way to take it to the next step in making it look more aesthetic. Themes can add diversity to your journal and change things up as your year goes on. Even sticking with a single theme or color palette throughout can make it more visually enticing and fun to flip through when it’s all filled out.
